Rabbeinu Bachya
A teachingGratitude in hardship is not denial of pain. It is the act of choosing what you will write on the day you are given, not the day you wish you had. Rabbeinu Bachya teaches that days are scrolls—you inscribe them by your choices, not by your circumstances. When life presses hard, gratitude becomes an act of refusal: you refuse to let the constraint write your scroll for you. You write instead. This requires two things. First, you must see clearly what duty lies before you now, in this narrowed place. Second, you must trust that even in difficulty, there is something to receive—not happiness, but the chance to become someone whose character is forged rather than merely pleased. The hardship itself is not good. But your response to it is entirely yours to choose.
