Overwhelmed at Work?
What Judaism says about burnout: five ideas, each with its source.
5 things Judaism can teach us about burnout. Work was not the curse. Isolation was. Delegate. Keep a handful with calm. Love the work itself.

- 1
You will wear out doing it alone.
נבל תבל“The thing you are doing is not good. You will wear yourself out.”Exodus 18:17–18
Exodus 18:17–18. Yitro watched Moshe judge every case himself and warned him: that pace is not noble, it is unsustainable. Burnout is not a failure of character. It is a failure of structure. One person cannot carry what ten can.
- 2
A handful of calm beats two fists of toil.
מלא כף נחת“Better a handful with calm than two handfuls with toil and chasing wind.”Ecclesiastes 4:6
Ecclesiastes 4:6. The hand filled with peace is the wealthy hand. Twice as much with no peace is poverty dressed up. The grind that never stops is not building something. It is preventing something worse. There is a difference.
- 3
Craft can be holy work.
בצלאל“I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom and knowledge of all crafts.”Exodus 31:3
Exodus 31:3. Bezalel, the craftsman of the Sanctuary, is the first person the Torah describes as filled with the spirit of God. Skilled work, done with care, is not separate from the sacred. It is how the sacred becomes real.
- 4
Love the work. Hate the throne.
אהוב את המלאכה“Love work, hate lordship.”Pirkei Avot 1:10
Pirkei Avot 1:10. Shemaya's teaching: love the labor, hate the lordship it might bring. The work itself is good. The status game is what is grinding you. The person who loves the work itself finds the same hours full.
- 5
Eat what your hands made.
יגיע כפיך“When you eat the labor of your hands, happy are you and it will be well with you.”Psalms 128:2
Psalms 128:2. There is a kind of rest that only comes after you have made something and lived in it. Not earned money for it. Made it. Eaten what you built. That satisfaction is different. It is the thing burnout steals.
Work was not the curse. Isolation was.
Delegate. Keep a handful with calm. Love the work itself.
Save this for Sunday night, and send it to the colleague who is drowning.
