Dreading Family Gatherings?

5 things Judaism can teach us before the table. The table is where stories turn. Yosef's did. Esav's did. Yours might.

  1. 1

    How good when brothers sit.

    שבת אחים
“How good and how pleasant when brothers dwell together.”Psalm 133:1

Psalm 133:1. Sung at tables for 3,000 years — by families that also fought. The harmony you sing about is not a given. It's a choice, sung together.

  2. 2

    Esav ran and embraced.

    ויחבקהו
“ran to meet him, embraced him, fell on his neck and kissed him.”Genesis 33:4

Genesis 33:4. After twenty years of hatred, Esav ran to meet him and embraced him. The feared reunion became the tender one. What was dreaded turns to grace when someone moves first.

  3. 3

    Rebuke — without carrying sin.

    הוכח תוכיח
“You shall surely rebuke your fellow, and not bear sin because of him.”Leviticus 19:17

Leviticus 19:17. Honesty at the table is a mitzvah. You can speak the truth and stay in relationship. The silence is what harms you both.

  4. 4

Yosef fed the brothers who sold him.

    יוסף
“Bring the men into the house, for they shall dine with me at noon.”Genesis 43:16

Genesis 43:16. The brothers who sold him came for grain, and Joseph had them brought to his table. He tested them, wept, and forgave. The table was where it turned. Feeding someone is not the end of the story, but it is where the story can change.

  5. 5

    Learn from everyone.

    הלומד מכל אדם
“Who is wise? One who learns from every person.”Pirkei Avot 4:1

Pirkei Avot 4:1. Including the uncle. Especially the uncle. The one you dread seeing teaches you something. The table is where you find out what.

The table is where stories turn.

Yosef's did. Esav's did. Yours might.

Save this for the ride over, and send it to the sibling you are nervous to see.
